From Mill to Moment: The Story of Old Town Event Center

Long before this space hosted celebrations, ceremonies, and community gatherings, it served a very different — but equally important — purpose.

In the early 1900s, Cornelius was growing into a mill town, shaped by the booming textile industry that powered much of the Carolina Piedmont. It was during this time, around 1905, that the building we now know as Old Town Event Center was constructed as the Gem Yarn Mill.

The mill was backed by Joseph Benjamin Cornelius, a prominent local entrepreneur and textile leader whose name still defines the town today. Like many mill founders of the era, Cornelius recognized the need for local industry — not only to produce goods, but to create steady employment and economic stability for the growing community.

The Gem Yarn Mill was built to process raw cotton into yarn, supplying the textile trade that fueled the region’s economy. At its height, the mill employed dozens of local workers, eventually growing to support more than 100 families whose livelihoods depended on the steady rhythm of work inside these walls.

This building was never just a factory. It was a cornerstone of daily life in Cornelius.

Inside, the mill floors carried the weight of long shifts. The brick walls absorbed the sound of machinery, conversation, and routine. Tall mill windows filled the space with natural light — a practical necessity for industrial work at the time, and a defining architectural feature that remains today.

For decades, the Gem Yarn Mill stood as a symbol of labor, resilience, and progress. It helped shape Cornelius into the town it would become, anchoring both its economy and its identity.

As the mid-20th century approached, the textile industry began to change. Like many mills across the South, the Gem Yarn Mill eventually closed — around 1962 — as production shifted elsewhere and traditional mill operations declined.

But unlike many industrial buildings that were demolished or forgotten, this one endured.

It remained standing as the last surviving cotton mill structure in Cornelius, a physical reminder of the town’s roots and the people who built it. Over the years, the building took on new roles — housing small businesses and antique shops — adapting without losing its character.

Eventually, a new chapter began.

Rather than erase the past, the decision was made to preserve it — to transform the mill into a place for gathering once again. This time, not for industry, but for people.

Today, as Old Town Event Center, the former Gem Yarn Mill continues its legacy of bringing the community together. The same space that once supported livelihoods now hosts life’s most meaningful moments: milestone birthdays, baby showers, school dances, weddings, community events, and Celebrations of Life.

The purpose has changed. The heart has not.

The floors still hold stories. The walls still carry memory. The windows still welcome light — now illuminating moments of joy, reflection, and connection.

Old Town Event Center is more than an event venue. It is a living piece of Cornelius history — proof that buildings can evolve without forgetting who they were, and that the strongest spaces are the ones that continue to serve their community in new and meaningful ways.

From mill to moment, this building has always been about people coming together.

And it still is.
